What you will learn in this workshop
This workshop focuses entirely on black-and-white portrait photography using natural light. I’ll explain the basic concepts, the approach, how to work with light and shadow, and which situations are ideal for a portrait. How should I, as a photographer, interact with the person in front of my camera? What influence do I have on the scene, and what should I avoid doing?
Black and white basics
A brief introduction and explanation of the basics of black-and-white photography.
Photographing in natural light
Thinking in black and white – that’s what we’ll practice together. How do I approach a portrait photo? Recognizing light and shadow. Learn to observe. “Work the scene.” What tools are available? What should I consider in my camera settings? What equipment do I need?
What you should bring
Apart from your good mood and eagerness to learn, it’s helpful if you bring your own camera 😁 ANY camera is welcome, yes even smartphones 📱
Structure
Part 1: The Foundation & The Vision
We begin by stripping away the distraction of color to focus on the core elements of a great portrait: texture, contrast, and soul.
- The Monochrome Mindset: Learn how to “read” light and understand how different colors translate into striking grey tones.
- Approaching the Subject: A portrait is more than a technical setting; it’s a relationship. We will discuss how to approach a subject with intentionality and empathy.
- The “Safe Space”: Learn the art of creating a comfortable environment where your subject feels seen and relaxed. We’ll explore techniques for authentic interaction to help you uncover and capture the true personality behind the face.
- Guided Exercises: We’ll dive straight into hands-on shooting exercises to practice positioning, shadow placement, and establishing rapport with your subject.
The Assignment: Before we meet again, you will be tasked with a specific “homework” project. This is your chance to apply these psychological and technical tools in your own environment.
Part 2: Review, Refine & Repeat
The second day is dedicated to the “Iterative Process”—the secret to moving from a good photographer to a great one.
- The Analysis: We start with a constructive group review of your homework. By analyzing your results and hearing the stories behind the shots, we’ll learn how to identify successes and areas for growth.
- Live Practice: Armed with fresh insights, you will head back into a live shooting session. This is your time to apply what you’ve learned from the review and push your skills further.
- Continuous Feedback: I will be working alongside you, providing 1-on-1 coaching as you shoot, review, and re-shoot to ensure you master the nuances of the craft.
What You’ll Walk Away With
By the end of this workshop, you won’t just have a collection of beautiful images; you’ll have a refined technical workflow and the emotional intelligence to capture soulful, high-contrast portraits using nothing but your camera and the sun.
